Coding companies turn documentation into CPT, HCPCS and ICD-10-CM codes. Accurate coding means fewer denials and less audit risk. Under-coding quietly costs money, and over-coding creates compliance problems.
What to look for
- Coders certified through AAPC (for example CPC) or AHIMA (for example CCS), with experience in your specialty.
- A regular internal audit of the coders' work, with accuracy results you can see.
- Clear turnaround times, often 24 to 48 hours from documentation.
- Feedback to your providers when documentation does not support the code.
What it usually costs
